Fungal toenail formulas can cost an excessive amount of money, sometimes more than $180.00 for a dermatological prescription that does not fully cure the problem. Once you finish the formula the fungus resurfaces, and you must pay for another prescription. This cycle goes on endlessly and never truly cures your fungal nail ailment.

Getting rid of nail fungus is not an easy task. It usually keeps coming back and refuses to be thoroughly healed. The fungus feeds on the keratin that makes up the surface of the toenail. Toenail fungus thrives in dark, moist environments. Public showers and closed shoes are prime culprits in helping fungi bloom. It is necessary to keep your feet clean and dry. Use antibacterial soap and wear cotton or wool socks to help absorb moisture from sweaty feet. Your shoes should allow your feet to breathe and expose them to sunlight. Sandals or slippers are ideal in helping heal fungi infections.

The trick is keeping your toenails clean, short and dry and not ever use another person’s toenail clippers or personal hygiene products. Clean your hygiene tools with boiling water and rubbing alcohol. Clip your toe nails and file them ultra thin. You could apply a prescription medication that is extremely costly or you could make your own home remedy.

I created this home recipe that works extremely well. It doesn't need to be refrigerated and will not spoil for six months. This home recipe works nicely; however, you need to be diligent in applying it to your clean toenails every day.

Combine the following in an opaque dropper bottle:

  • 3 ounces of Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil,
  • 3 ounces of Bragg's Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and
  • About 35 drops of Oil of Oregano Essential Oil.

The combination of olive oil, apple cider vinegar and essential oregano oil helps to kill the fungi and heal your toenail. You must massage this formula into your toe nails twice a day after you clean and dry your feet. As your toenail is healing keep your nail remarkably short and filed flat. Expose your nail to as much fresh air as possible and purchase new shoes often. Old shoes usually harbor fungi and bacteria remains and make re-infection highly probable.

Nail salons are the leading culprit in spreading toe nail fungus. Many are cited for not meeting health codes. If you must have a professional pedicure, insist on making sure your nail technician sterilizes the instruments or you may bring your own clean nail tools that free from fungal bacteria. You can boil your nail scissors in boiling water to sterilize them.

Ask a salon employee to cleanse and disinfect the basin you place your feet into when washing your feet. Bring your personal new emery boards, nail scissors and nail polish, to lessen your chances of getting a hard to get rid of toenail fungus.

To keep your nails healthy, make sure the nail polish you use is water based without formaldehyde, toluene or phthalate. These chemicals are known to disrupt organ function and cause cancer.

Once you get a toe nail fungus it might take an unusually long time to get rid of, and it could horribly take more than a year to fully heal. You will need to cut back on your consumption of sugar and simple carbohydrates because sugar weakens your immune system and feeds the fungi. Make sure you eat a substantial amount of cultured products containing “friendly” bacteria. This lactobacilli helps to inhibit the growth of fungus under and around the nail bed. Eliminate foods from your diet that tend to promote secretion of mucus like dairy and meat products. Avoid soda drinks, processed foods and fatty or fried foods. Eat heaps of garlic because it helps to neutralize most fungi.

When a fungus is not wholly irradiated, it can travel into your blood stream and cause severe fungal infection of the internal surfaces of the colon and produce jock itch, and vaginal infections. People who have fungal infections in one area often also have fungal infections in other areas.

Wow I can remember this one, that is usually what I eat in my salad, lol. I had a friend of a friend have to have her toenails on the big toe taken off! Now she just paints the skin to make it look like a toenail. I will bookmark this, I use to keep a notebook, I should still or a folder online in case anyone needs this. I go for natural. I will vote this one up and useful for sure and you are at a great chance to hit the top. Good luck. Great hub. Polly

Thank you Polly! The combination of oregano essential oil, Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar and extra virgin olive oil works very well. You have to remember to apply it to your nail at least twice a day.

Hi Polly this subject is pretty personal for me and I got infected with fungus on my big toe from a salon that did not sterilize the equipment properly. It's better now but not completely gone away. I used the apple cider but I didn't try the oregano oil, I am going to add that to the mix and see if that helps. Thanks a lot.

Sorry you got infected Charlene!

Remember to clean and cut your toe nails before applying the oregano oil mixture. Extra virgin coconut oil works very nicely as well in removing nail fungus. The procedure is the same, cut off the part of your nail that is infected, then apply the extra virgin coconut oil twice or three times a day. Good Luck! It may take more than eight months to clear your nail fungus, therefore don't give up too soon.
